The weather was warm and wonderful, so we took a vacation day from work, and followed this opportunity to explore our nearby San Gabriel Mountains. As someone who grew up in the flat-lands of the American Midwest, these dramatic mountains hold an attraction and "wow". We drove out to an area near Mount Baldy (or the official name of Mount San Antonio). This region has some of the tallest mountains in Los Angeles County. Even though it is still autumn, there was a certain spring-like quality with the crisp cool air and melting snow (leftover from the last storm). Mountain water cascaded down from three levels called the San Antonio Falls. We came across another couple with a dog. The dog was going crazy in the snow — jumping up and down, digging, sliding, rolling around, and having a joyful time. We hiked a portion of the Baldy Bowl Trail. It's a strenuous uphill climb, but the spectacular views are worth all the effort. We could have kept going and conquered a mountain, but today was an opportunity to breathe in the fresh mountain air and to take in the scent of pines. We'll certainly be back again.

The idea of following a trail is intriguing. I was telling my son that if you walk on this trail north, you can travel all the way to Canada. If you walk south, you can walk to Mexico. He asked if guards would stop us at the national border, and I added that nature doesn't have borders, so maybe we don't have to stop. Birds, animals, and insects cross the borders all the time. Today our family took a day hike on the Pacific Crest Trail, also called as the "PCT", in northern Los Angeles County. It was a bright and sunny autumn day. Walking trails take us from here to there. But they are especially valuable in our present society of technology and automation. Trails are restorative — for physical health, mental health, and can return a sense of adventure. They also help us to "slow down", and to bring us closer to nature's beauty. So here is to the legendary Pacific Crest Trail! We had a good day. Perhaps we crossed paths with other adventurous travelers on their way to Canada or Mexico. Here is some content on the PCT that I discovered online...
